We are very grateful for their accompaniment on this trip as 1) it made it possible but also 2) Aster loved hanging out with them and spending quality time together and 3) we had a lot of cold mornings and their trailer was a great way to get out of the cold and not have any suffer factor on the cold mornings, rainy afternoons, or windy evenings.

They were to be our shuttle drivers and baby sitters while we were on the water. Additionally, my parents would drive out from California to meet us in the middle, with their trailer. The plan was for Diane and Aster to fly out, and for me to drive our car with all out gear. So instead, we used that block of time for a road trip to Colorado, a trip we had planned and canceled in 2020 in the early days of the pandemic. However, due to Covid, that still was not a possibility. Originally, we planned to go to the French and Italian Alps with Harry Glanz again. Spring floods can carry trees and other debris and jam up a section of a river causing a strainer (water flows through but solids do not). This was the plan B for the spring this year. – Scout rapids and unknown sections of the river. Point your feet down river in fast water and as soon as possible swim to shore. – If you fall into swift water, do not attempt to stand up, as doing so may result in a foot entrapment. – Raft with a buddy and avoid floating alone, especially during high flows. – Don’t get in over your head, paddle in conditions you are comfortable and confident paddling in. – Research and check the current river conditions of the stretches you intend to run. – Dress accordingly: though the air temperature may be hot, the water is very cold. A ski vest is not appropriate for whitewater boating. – Use a personal flotation device (PFD) that is properly fitted and designed for whitewater boating or paddling. If you don’t have the gear, the expertise or the experience, this is a good time to see one of the many rafting guide services in the area.” “This is a river that requires experience and expertise, especially at these levels. “Be safe, wear your emergency gear and know before you go,” Fremont SAR stated. This means they need to be tight … “almost uncomfortably so.” life vest, you are not giving yourself much of a chance in the case of an accident,” Fremont SAR’s Facebook post states.įremont SAR stated that PFD’s need to fit, be worn and adjusted so that they are not pulled off if you do go in the water. “This is a very powerful river, and if you are not wearing a properly fitted and adjusted personal floatation device, i.e. Water flowing at seven miles per hour has the equivalent force per unit area as air blowing above 200 miles per hour. Just six inches of water can knock a person off their feet. Officials with CPW say river water exerts a very powerful and constant force against any fixed object. “You should always wear a life vest, paddle with a buddy, know your limitations and scout rapids prior to floating them,” said Grant Brown, boating safety program manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The underpass likely will reopen once the river level drops a little below 2,000 cfs, later this summer.Ĭolorado Parks & Wildlife said the dangers of high water levels and swift-moving rapids extend to kayakers, river rafters, tubers, anglers, swimmers and families who picnic by the water. The district says the underpass likely will be closed for a significant amount of time this summer, and it reminds people to be safe when recreating around the Arkansas River. The Canon City Recreation and Park District on Thursday closed the Ninth Street underpass on the Arkansas Riverwalk Trail because of the high water. According to AccuWeather, local temperatures beginning Thursday will stay in the 80s through the end of June, helping to melt off any remaining snow. Geological Survey reports that the record high for the Parkdale meter was recorded at 5,800 cfs in 1985, and the recorded low was 467 cfs in 2012.
